HOSTILE DEMONSTRATION.
(Australian and N.Z. Pros Association.)
(Received 12 noon.) ROME, October 3. Gene Tunney was married in the! strictest privacy in the presence of twenty persons, the majority of whom! were friends who accompanied the bride from America. Of the two flower-filled drawing rooms at the Hotel Russie, one was used for the civil ceremony, which waa performed by Signor Brofferio, the Fascist leader, and the other for the religious ceremony 'fchen Tunney's intimate friend, Monsignor Breslin, the vice-rector of the American College, presided. Tunney was radiant and Miss Lauder looked her prettiest. The bride's mother wept when the wedding rings were exchanged and the couple departed for their destination, which was not revealed. Tunney and his bride were the subject of a hostile demonstration as they left by motor car for Northern Italy. Sections of the crowd became violent, and it is reported that some spat on the car. The demonstration is alleged to have been organised by photographers and cinema men annoyed at Tunney's refusal to permit photographs to be taken. i Throughout the wedding Tunney persistently refused permission for photographers to approach the scene, and it is reported that he threatened to smash the camera of anyone attempting it.
