"PRETTY HARD LUCK."
MISFORTUNE AT MT. EDEN.
MAN'S DAMAGED TROUSERS. UNSYMPATHETIC COUNCIL. "Pretty.hard luck," said Mr. D. C. Eraser at a meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening when the Finance Committee made an adverse report on a claim for £3 by a local resident who damaged a pair of trousers through the collapse of portion of the surface of a footpath while he was walking. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. A. M. Bryden) said that the council was not responsible. Mr. tF. Morris said that the council recently paid a claim made by a lady who damaged her stocking through falling on a footpath. In the present instance the applicant had to go to work dressed up, and would find it hard to pay for new trousers. Mr. Fraser said that it was time to draw a line somewhere or they would have plenty of claims for pairs of pants. They had already paid one claim of 30/. They had simply taken a man's word, and had not seen the pants. There should be some proof, otherwise they would go on for ever.
The council decided not to accept liability.
