AUCKLAND ORPHANS CLUB.
GUESTS FROM EVELYN FIRTH HOME.
The principal gueete at the Auckland Orphans’ Club on Saturday evening were a party of returned soldiers, suffering from war disabilities, inmates of the Evelyn Firth Home. The chairman, Mr. G. P. Finlay (vice-president) extended a hearty welcome, and the large assemblage of over 700 members gave rousing cheers for these honoured war heroes.
Mr. V ic. Lewis replied on behalf of the veterans of the club, the chairman, referring to its formation in September, 1892, and to the fact that several of the earliest members were present at that evening’s gathering. The orchestra, under the baton of Mr. Hai old Baxter, played incidental music to “Mons. Beaucaire” (Ross), and the selection “Scottish Folk Songs” (Myddleton), which were received with enthusiastic applause.
Other enjoyable items were songs by Sergeant-Major Halahan, Messrs. Moffit, Jas. Lonergan, and Claude Allen; humorous songs by Messrs. G. O. Jones and Ernest Luks; harmony by the Ha Ha Bovs; cornet solos by Mr. Rex Wills; and a jiu-jitsu exhibition by Masters F. H. Robertson, A. F. Budd, A. B. Brown, and L. W. Smith, Mount Albert Grammar School boys, under Mr. A. D. Trendall. The accompaniments were played by Messrs. W. Dingle and T. Sparling.
