SOCCER FOOTBALL.

WET-DAY GAMES.

Y.M. AND PONSONBY DRAW.

ONEHUNGA DEFEAT BELMONT.

Soccer senior competition was carried through on Saturday under the most unpleasant conditions. On Blandford Park the meeting of Ponsonbv and Y.M.C.A. had an important bearing on the championship, and the division of the points puts Ponsonby and Tramways on a level footing. Y.M. started off with a dash, and soon had a lead of three goals, but Ponsonby plodded on, and in the closing stages drew level. Northcote defaulted to Tramways, while at Onehunga the local side put up a meritorious performance against Belmont, and ran out winners by 3 goals to 1.

Claudelands, Hamilton, played a friendly game with North Shore, and quite an enjoyable display of the code was given, the game ending in a draw.

AN EXCITING DRAW. Y.M.C.A. opened in sensational style against Ponsonby, and in the first couple of minutes Whaley sent the ball into the net. This was followed very shortly afterwards with another hot attack, and from a penalty Grant added Y.M.’s second goal. After a Pononby attack, in which Wilson’s shot was a “poster,” Y.M.C.A. returned to the attack, and Grant added his second goal. Ponsonby rallied strongly after making positional changes and from a cornerkick Innes opened their scoring just on halftime. Continuing to force the pace, Ponsonby were rewarded when Stewart added their second goal well on in the last half, and a little later Innes equalised scores. For the last few minutes of the game play was highly exciting, but neither side could get the winning advantage, and the final whistle went with the score 3 all. ONEHUNGA BEAT BELMONT. At Onehunga the home team turned out a man short against Belmont, playing only one full-back, but they kept the visitors fully employed. Robertson scored for Belmont early in the game, but Onehunga stuck to their task and Rivers equalised the score before half-time. In the second half the home players took a decided lead through goals by Gill and Rivers, and the game ended : Onehunga 3, Belmont 1. CAUDELANDS V. SHORE. These teams played the curtain-raiser at Blandford Park, the game ending in a draw. The only goal of the first spell was scored by Jay, for Shore. Early in the second half Emmerson put the visitors level, and then Schonan added a goal to give them the lead, but Walters got a second goal for Shore almost immediately, and the game ended JUNIOR RESULTS.
