HOCKEY.

DEPLETED TEAMS. BIG WIN BY OTAHUHU. ST. LUKE’S BEAT ’VARSITY. The Devonport Shield matches were continued at the Remuera Grounds on Saturday under the most treacherous conditions. Heavy rain fell throughout the period of play, and the grounds cut up badly, the players having the greatest difficulty in maintaining a foothold. Despite these great handicaps, play was of a surprisingly good standard. St. Luke’s and the students had a great <»o, and it was due to the fine all-round combination of the reds that a victory of 2 goals to nil was gained. Mount Eden, with an improvised team, played a scoreless draw with Epiphany. Otahuhu were in merry mood with Training College, and won by 8 goals to £ Somerville Colts, by arrangement, defaulted to Somerville, and thus enabled the senior eleven to journey to Hamilton. The withdrawal of North Shore gave the University Whippets a twopoint win. Only four junior games, two men’s and two ladies’, were played.

Both Mt. Eden and Epiphany had to fill gaps with juniors, but they staged a good contest, in which neither side was able to score, the game ending in a pointless draw. WIN FOR ST. LUKE’S. The best game of the afternoon was provided by St. Luke's and University. In the opening session the students brought off a number of good attacking movements, but were unlucky in the circle. St. Lake’s displayed greater steadiness when within shooting distance, and T. Giles got one Into the net. Almost similar play marked the second half, and J. Giles scored, the game ending: St. Lake’s 2. University 0.

OTAHUHU’S DAY OUT.

Training College proved no match for Otahuhu. though Turner netted them the first goal. Before the first half closed Jenkins nnd Gardener (2) had put the suburban team two goals up. In the second half Otnhuhu put on five more goals, three hr Gardener and one each hr Nelld and Mingins, while Taylor and White got one each for Training College, who were defeated by 8 to 3. LADIES* HOCKEY. JUNIOR. Mt. Eden 3, beat Somerville 1. Technical 3 t beat Papakura 1.

THIRD GRADE. Waitemata 2, beat Grammar 0. FOURTH GRADE. St. Luke’s 2, beat Otahuhu 1.

POPE SHIELD MATCH.

WESTPORT, Sunday. A ladies’ hockey match for the Pope Shield, held by Buller, with Nelson as the challengers, was played yesterday. Buller won by 6 goals to 0.

GAMES IN THE SOUTH.

WELLINGTON. Playing for the hockey challenge shield at Newtown Park on Saturday, Poverty Bay offered the strongest opposition experienced by Wellington in representative matches this season. There was little between the teams in the first spell. A sodden ground prevented a bright display, which would otherwise bave resulted. At half-time the score was two all. Wellington took the aggressive In the second spell, and scored twice more, the final score being: Wellington 4, Poverty Bay 2. McGavin (2), Robb and R. HAMILTON. Auckland Juniors 6, beat Hamilton B 5. It was a close and exciting game. Monteith opened the score for Waikato after some close work in the goal-mouth. From a corner Jones scored for Auckland. Shortly afterwards Mills scored for Waikato. Both Hay and Jones scored for Auckland a little later, and then W. Monteith scored for Waikato. Two more goals for Auckland were scored by Jones and one by Brown, and Dunn scored two for Waikato. In a good even game Somerville (Auckland) 3 beat Hamilton 2. For Somerville E. Watts (2) and Seccombe scored. G. Guthrie received a hit on the head from a back swing of a stick, necessitating first aid. ROTORUA. The Rotorua ladies’ hockey team played a team from Otorohanga in the Government grounds. Rotorua won by six goals to o.
