NURMI RETIRES.
Famous Distance Runner Past' His Peak. HOLDER OP MANY RECORDS.' (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) LONDON, September 21. Paavo Nurmi, the world-famous Finnish runner, who is staying at Budapest, says he intends to retire from athletics at the end of this year. He says he finds it requires more intense training to attain his customary speed. Nurmi's parents are religious fisherfolk. They have never approved of his ' athletic career because it has involved j racing on Sundays.
I From 1920 to 1928 Paavo Nurmi has been one of the great figures in international track athletics, and at the Olympic Games in that period has always been the chief winner in distances between one and five miles. At present he holds the world records for the one, four and fivemile distances and for 1500 metres, 3000 metres and 5000 metres. He is 31 years of age. PROFESSIONAL GOLF. (Australian and N.Z.
