COUHTT COUHCII* MEETS. THE COST OF ROAD REPAIRS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, this day. The chairman (Mr. J. X. Massey), presided over a full attendance of members at the regular meeting c: Franklin County Council yesterday. Regarding cases of distress amongst Maoris in the district, the Auckland Hospital Board advised the cases had been investigated and temporary relief granted where necessary. The Auckland Harbour Board thanked the council for its contribution of £500 towards the reconstruction of Pollok •wharf, and intimated that the work would be proceeded with as soon as possible. The Papakuia Town Board signified its approval of the proposal to divide the maintenance of boundary road between the council and the board, provided the council agreed to assist towards maintenance and possible future reconstruction of the bridge ou this road. The council agreed to the board's request. Regarding a half chain road near Opaheke station, which w .is extensively used in the 6awmiiling days, and which the settlers want dedicating, it was decided to ask the Public Works Department if it would accept dedication of the road with its present width. Eight Drurv settlers asked the council to form and drain Derbyshire and Telzlaf Streets to give residents access to their homes. It was stated that nothing could be done owing to the strained position of the riding's finances, unless the settlers concerned were prepared to contribute. Mr. H. J. Flay and the engineer are to investigate the position. Preliminary steps are to bs taken to raise a loan of £7000 for shelling main roads in the Awhitu riding as far as Pollok. Application is to be made to the Loan* Board for its sanction t the borrowing of £700 for the purpose of metalling Urqubart's Road. Karaka, from the end of the present metal road for a distance of 120 chains. It was decided to notify the Mercer Town Board that the council bad no power to delegate its authority to lb* board to issue motor drivers' lice noes. The treasurer reported that since April 1, £16,688 had been expended on works out of main roads and riding accounts. An amount of £8934, including Highways Board subsidy, £5360, had been expended on the main highways in the county., The engineer was authorised to repair the Maukti bridge, on the Waiuku-Drurv main road. The estimated cost of repairs was £425. The engineer said the bridge would carry traffic for the next 12 years if this amount was expended on it, despite the fact that it was built about 60 years ago.
