RAGLAN NEWS.

The annual encampment of a portion of the second battalion A.M.R. was held here this week, about 200 men of the Hamilton, Te Awamutu, Cambridge, and Raglan squadrons being in camp. Capt. Brown, mounted instructor for the North Island, assisted by Staff-Sergt.-Major Walker, had. charge of the camp, which was pitched on Friday. Good work was accomplished up til! Tuesday, when a delnge of rain set in, aud Wednesday the men were kept in camp all day. Skirmishing, field and firing exercises were indulged iv. aud the camp proved, most instructive. A sham fight was held on Tuesday. On Thursday the Challenge Shield was fired for, Hamilton winning, with Cambridge second. Ou Friday morniug the camp broke up, the visiting companies returning to their homes, and as the different squads left the town they were lustily cheered.
On Thursday night the volunteers' ball was held at the Raglan Town Hall, a large number of the visiting members being present, as well as a large number of residents joyable night's amusement was the result. A dance was held in the Raglan Town Hall on Tuesday night last in aid of purchasing music for hall and lighting account. In spite of the bad weather, there was a large attendance, aud a most enjoyable evening was the result. Some £11 was realised at the door, the doll competition bringing in £4. During the evening songs were contributed by Mrs. Husband, Miss Dent, Mr. Foss, and Master F. Husband. Mr. Alex. Livingstone carried out the duties of M.C.
A most successful dance was held at Te Mata Hall, under the auspices of the Te Mata Tennis Club, between 40 and 50 couples taking part.
