ATHLETICS.

During an athletic meeting held at New York last month, Ray 0. Ewrv, of the New York Athletic Club, made "a new world's record for amateurs (without weights) in the standing broad jump. Ewry cleared lift. 6in. The forthcoming gala of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club is attracting great attention and promises to be a thoroughly successful meeting. Practically all the amateurs who competed on Labour Day are keeping in form, and a large number of new members will run. About a hundred and fifty new members have joined the club, and a real revival in. amateur athletics is apparent. The gathering will be held on Victoria Park the Saturday before Christmas, and the attendance should approach those of the palmy days of the club. According to latest English flies, a new Shrubb has been discovered in the person of a youngster named W. Coates, of Thrapston, near Northampton. Starting otf 60 yards he won a three-mile handicap in the easiest of fashions in 14min. 47sec. He ran through a field of 84 runners, took the lead in two and a-half mijes, and trotted in SO yards ahead. At Salford, on September 8, L. A. Burton eoualled T. M. Donovan's English record of 38 4-oscc. for 300 yards hurdles, but English hurdle records, except for 120 y«rds, are somewhat foolish things, as the conditions may vary considerably as to the number of hurdles, or their" distance apart.
