BOWLING.

THE AUCK-LA-SD CLUB'S OPENING. Brilliant was the day for the IUU6-7 opening function of the Auckland Bowling Club on Saturday, and truly brilliant In every respect was the success that attended the efforts of the club officials to make the afternoon a pleasant and memorable *>ne In the club"c history. The beautiful Auckland greeu lends itself peculiarly well to such a gathering as was that of Saturday, and the appearance of the ground during the afternoon, with the gaily-flying flags, the blending colours of the dresses of the fair sex, and the soberer uniforms of the bowlers, was decidedly animated and a joy to the eye generally. The club's colours were prominent among the decorations of the afternoon tea room, while on the slope between the greens the Maori welcome "Haeraemal" was conspicuous in broad characters o£ black and gold. An excellent orchestra provided good music, and tne afternoon tea department, supervised by. Mrs Mennie, wlfe ut the president, was in the capable hands of a number of ladles, assisted liy a bevy of younger ones to wait upon the guests. Tlie president (Mr J. M. Aleniile) extended a hearty welcome to visiting bowlers aud their lauy I'rieuds, and trusted that all would spend a pleasaut afternoon. That was the 44th year of the Auckiaud Club's existence, and Mr Culpan had told him that their club was the lirst bowling club formed ou this side of the Equator. After Mrs Mennie had performed the necessary ceremonial of throwing the. ja«-k across the green, a mutch, president's v. vlce-presl-denta' teams, was played, the former winning by 33 points (.'ioo An exceedingly enjoyable and successful function was 'brought to a close by mutual cheers between the club members and visiting bowlers Mr A. Coutts, president of the I'onsonby Club, voicing the thanks of the visitors generally to the dub and ladles fer the pleasant afternoon afforded them. Hearty clieers were also given for the president and Mrs Mennie and the ladles associated with the ."ifteruoou tea arrangements. The followiug are the detailed scores:— President: V. Casey, t>.
