YOUNG MAN MISSING.
PECULIAR PROCEEDINGS
Some time' ago we reported the receipt by the police of a pencilled letter stating that the writer, named Edward Deering, tired of life and ejrasperated by aspersions upon his character, would be found drowned in the harboun He was ziot so found, although his overcoat, with the letter m,a pocket, was found banging on a rail of one of the wharves. In bis letter Deering made reference to the fact that lie "was a. member of th Cntral Mission, and in their, efforts to find him or his body the police were assisted occasionally by members oi the Mission, who knew Deering by sight. The latest.news now is that one of the Mission members has had a conversation with. Deering in Auckland since the ''drowning," and that Deering remarked "I was in the water all right, but got out again." Mr Spenee Atkinson, a farmer of Ihumata, by whom Deering was employed, cays that Deering was not capable of anything like suicide. At one time Deering worked for Messrs Field and Dick, poultry farmers, of Mt. Albert; and the police theory is that Deering had an object in desiring himself to be reported, dead. The search is still proceeding to definitely settle the matter.
