Joseph Doherty, aged 28, a horsetrainer, was found dead on the Taradale road this morning, death being due to hemorrhage of the lungs. Mrs Masters, the victim of the Hastings shooting affray, is still in a very critical condition, although the bullet has been extracted. WANGANUI RIVER SERVICE. WANGANUI, this day. Messrs. Hatrick and Co.'s new steamers having arrived on the Wanganui River, the service which connects the new overland route from Auckland to Wellington, via the Central route and the Wanganui River, has been increased to a tri-weekly service. WESTPORT COAL COMPANY. DUNEDIN, this day. j At the annual meeting of the WestI port Coal Company this afternoon, the | chairman, after referring to the balancesheet, said the profit this year was not so great as last, owing to a decreased output, due to several causes- In the first part of the year the company was unable to supply the demand, work in j one section of the mine having to be i stopped owing to a slip in tlie roof. When that difficulty was overcome, and the company was able to increase the output, the trade fell off, partly owing to the railways being supplied from the State mine, and partly to competition from Newcastle and other local mines. The Millerton manager reports having tapped a seam of new good hard coal, which wall open out a large area hitherto untouched. TE AWAITE TRIAL. WELLINGTON, this day. The trial of Ellis, charged with the murder of Collinson, at Te Awaite, was resumed this afternoon, the jury having returned from their visit to the scene of the crime.
