A correspondence respecting Messrs Walsh and McCabe's method of carrying out their contract for widening the Britomart Breakwater.
From the letters it appeared that the Engineer had found fault with the centractors work, and that on receiving a letter from the Secretary of the Board the contractors had written to the Board statiDg that their work was of a superior character to that contracted for. At a meeting of the Works Committee it had been determined that the engineer was right, and the contractors wrong. A reference to Messrs Wbitaker and .Russell had produced a letter stating that the contractor had their power to recover for superior work under the 6th clause of the agreement, and suggested that the Board might employ another engineer to give his opinion on the work.
The Chairman and Mr Tole were of opinion that the contractors, having arrived at deep water, found the work heavier, and were now anxious to get rid of their contract and leave the Board in the lurch.
Mr McKenzie advocated the appointment of another engineer. Mr Eaton thought it would be necessary to appoint two more, if any. Mr Holdbhip moved that the contractors be written to and asked to state their grievance definitely. CUTTER. FANNIES FINE.
