HARBOUR BOARD.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Harbour Board took place this afternoon. There were present Messrs Cosgrave, Eaton, Tole, Brett, Buchanan, M. Niccol, Boylan. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr. Boylan was voted to the chair. PETITI6N FKOM THE CARTERS. The following letter from the carters on the Queen-street Wharf was read :— "To the Chairman and Members of the Auckland Harbour Board,—We the undersigned beg respectfully to call the attention of the Harbour Board and submit for its consideration at its next meeting th§ unsatisfactory position in which we are now placed : limited by law to carry only 30 cwt., as a load of goods, to and from the Queen-street' Wharf. We would respectfully suggest that 35 or 40 cwt., be substituted, for this reason : the road to and from the wharf is level and good, and the load of 40cwt. is not, in our opinion, too heavy for the horses, nor would it prove in any way more detrimental to the wharf than the load of 30cwfc., and would prevent our unintentionally breaking the law, which is now sometimes the case as the greater number of loads are guessed at for the reason that there are no means at arriving at the exact weight at the receiving end of the wharf. Should the Board not accede to this our request, and 60 cwt is to be the limit by law, we beg to request an alteration in the tolls proportionate to fche increase, otherwise we as forwarding acents will be be compelled to increase oar charges to our customers, which they consider quite heavy enough. We subscribe ourselves : Joseph Craig, Jaggar and Parker, W G. Winstone, Anderson and Co., W. Smith, Hi Elliott, and James Butcher." A discussion ensued, and Mr Hold ship moved and Mr D. H. McKenzie seconded, that the loads be limited to 2 tons. This was put to the meeting and earned.
