POLICE COURT.—This Day.
(Before Messrs Macffarlane and Dargaville, Justices.) WHISKY AND THE WEATHER. William Mullen, a sailor of bronze countenance, who had. been exposed to the weather, resorted last night to the whisky bottle and got drunk. He was fined 10s and costs. John Shepherd, a Fijian, was charged with the same offence, and fined in the same amount, and Andrew Johnston, a modest lad | from auld Reekie, was fined ss, this being his first offence. BREACH OP NAVAL TRAINING ACT. Joseph Danzey, a boy of 12, wa3 charged with a breach of the Naval Tiaining School Act with being a neglected charge. Constable James Jackson said the boy was the son of a poor woman at Parnell, who had no control over him. He had no father. He was ia the habit of sleeping out at nights, and once he was detected breaking into a dwelling. The Bench said this evidence was the same as that given eighteen months' ago, and there must be some specific charge against the boy or the Bench could not deal with him. It would be like punishing the boy a second time for the old offence were they to commit him to the Naval Training School. They might dismiss him and bring him in again on some charge and tbey would take evidence. Mr. Broham said tho object was that the boy should not be exposed to the temptations of the streets, that l.c would ask for a recommitment.
Captain Breton said ho must object to the dismissal of the boy, as hte time was not up till the sth August. The Bench: Then you had better take charge of him until hU time is up, and then bring him before the Ojurt to be dealt with according to the A at.
