MOUNT EDEN.

The ratepayers of Mount Eden Highway District held their annual meeting last evening in the Eden Vine Hotel—Mr John Probert in the chair. The financial statement shewed receipts from all sources : £1,128 Is sd; expenditure : £1,030 15s 3d; balance: £97 6s 2d.—Mr Shepherd moved a vote of thanks to the trustees for purchasing the tollgates in tie district, which had been of considerable advantage.— Mr Kirby objected on the ground that it was wrong for a public body to oppose private competition. He would aiso assert that the accounts were "cooked." —Mr Hurst reminded Mr Kirby that he was in the presence of honest men, and if he dared to repeat his assertion, he would bring him before a court of justice. —Mr Kirby immediately cooled down and became more temperate in his remarks, and the vote of thanks to the trustees was carried. —The motion " That the rate be Id in the £ with power to sell," was also carried.— The following gentlemen were then elected trustees : Messrs Probert, CTdy, Garlick, Layers, and Shepherd.—Messrs Harper and Thompson were then elected auditors, and Messrs Pace and Hurst were appointed fenceviewers. — A vote of thanks closed the meeting.
