Island News.
(BY THE ' MARTHA.')
FOR the following items of news from the Navigator's and Friendly Groups, we are indebted to the captain of the barque Martha :— . • . r ' On our departure from Samoa we lett there the American ship of war Tuscarora, which had been anchored there for for seven weeks previous, the captain being engaged in settling claims of American citizens resident there, against Samoans* for damage done to property during the late war. : She also brought down from California, Colonel Steinberger, with letters and presents from President Grant to the Samoans, and recommending Colonel Steinberger to the natives as a proper person to advise them in framing laws. They have accepted his advice in the matter, and .have set up a king named Malietoa. In Vavau harbour we met the Vision, brig, on her way to Samoa, and the whale ship' California, both of which were there when we sailed* In Tongatabu, we met the Hawaiian schooner Dauntless, and Peerless, schooner, both from Auckland. The latter arrived the day previous to our departure, and the former sailed for Fiji two days before.
