NEWTON HIGHWAY BOARD.
The annual meeting of ratepayers of the Newton district was held at noon to-day in the Newton Hall, Mr Richard Warnock in the chair. In consequence of the early hour of the meeting, only twenty persons were present. ■ ' Mr F. J. Jones, chairman" of the outgoing Board, read the financial statement, which shewed that the money collected from all sources during the past year including a balance of £23 ,14s lid from the previous year,.amounted to £375 143 Bd,_and that the expenditure for the same period was £352 4s 4d, leaving a balane of £23 103 4d.in the bank. : ' . The report upon being put to the meeting was unanimously adopted. Mr Jones proposed, and Mr McNair seconded that the rate, be Id in the £, with power to sell; Carried. The nomination of trustees was then proceeded with, and the following gentlemen proposed : Messrs. F. J. Jones, McNair, Maclean, Warnock, Read, and Wilson. Messrs. Billington and Jones were appointed scrutineers. The result was as follows : Jones, 61 ; McNair, 57 ; Maclean, 43 ; Warnock, 40 ; Read, 36 ; and Wilson, 29. five former gentlemen were declared elected for the current year. Mr Jones then addressed the meeting at some length on the cow nuisance, and said that some forty or fifty cows wore continually wandering about the district, . tearing up their roads, breaking down their fences, and destroying the young trees and these cows belonged to persons who did not contribute one penny towards, the rates of the Newton district. .He considered that it was high time that some strenuous effort was made to put a stop to this kind,of vandalism. If they spoke to the owners upon the subject they met with laughter and insult ; (hear: hear.) He would therefore propose "that a requisition be sent to his
Honor the Superintendent to allow the Fencing Suspension Act to come into operation in the Newton District, and that the Chairman be requested to forward a copy of the resolution to his Honor without delay." , . , Seconded by Mr McNair and carried unanimously. The meeting, which was of a most harmonious character, closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
