ROBBERY ON THE CUTTER TAY.
A BOBBEJ'.Y was committed on board the cutter Tay .on Sunday night, and the offender was sentenced at the local R.M. Court by Pi.. C. Barstow, Esq., R.M., and brought into town by Constable Greene this morning and transferred -to Mount Eden Caol. Ifc appeirs that a seaman on the the Tay named Philip Tandy was visited on Sunday night by a Swedish seaman from the Atalanta named Carl Hugo Sioberge, or (in .tfuglhh parlance) Charles Carrington, who remained all night. Tandy had then two one - pound notes in a memorandum book under his head in his bunk, and this fact became known to the Swede. In the morning, Sioberge was missing and so were the notes. Tandy thought it best to consult Constable Greene, and in company with that efficieat officer the Atalanta was searched, when the notes were discovered between the timbers and a plank in the bunk where the Swede's clothes were put. Of course he stoutly denied .all knowledge of it, but unfortunately for him evidence was forthcoming to show that he bad been seen coming aboard the Atalanta with a pair of stockings, no doubt, judging that his fruit 3of his industry if he continued to prosper at the same rate, would require such accommodation. These stockings were also identified as having been taken from the Tay, and, when charged with stealing them, the light-fingered Swede confessed the soft impeachment, although he still stoutly denied tampering with the notes. After hearing the evidence of Tandy, Mr W. H. Candy, mate of the Atalanta, M. Mathesonand Constable Green, which showed conclusively that no one but Sioberge was in the Tay's cabin or knew anything of the monsy. fhe magistrate sentenced him to six months^ imprisonment with hard labour. He is, we are informed one of the useful immigrants forwarded by Ur Featherston at the cost of tha colony, which will likewise become charged with his maintenance when here.
