PORT CHALMERS.
(From our own Correspondent.) This day. First New Steamer of the Union
Line.
The steamer Hawea, the first of the Union Company's new interprovincial boats arrived to-day from Glasgow, 66 days ont. She called at St. Vincent to coal and at Cape Town to ballast. Had a five weather passage, the absolute running being 62 days. She is magnificent vessel, 461 tons, and 165 horse-power, compound engine, and takes the shine out of auy steamer on the coast. Her accommodation is first rate. She is elaborately fitted and finished, and steams 9£ knots on a daily consumption of 9 tons coal. She will steam 12 knots on a consumption of 12 tons. Captain Wheeler late of the Taranaki, commands her. She must take well in the inter-provincial trade.
