PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

Tlia Provincial Scholarships, four in number, which are to be competed for on the lGth December, entitle the holder to L3O a year and free tuition at the Grammar School. They are therefore of sufficient value and importance to attracst a large number of candidates, and may be the means of a boy of talents, no matter what the rank in life of his parents may be, of ultimately attaining the highest education—a boon which few will fail tg appreciate. The subjects on which the competitors will be examined are as follows :— SUBJECTS IX WHICH COMPETITORS WILL BE EXAMINED. ; . English Language.—Grammar : Composition —the Writing of a letter, if not less than a given length, on a given subject ; Words —Meaning, Derivation, &c, Spelling to be judged from the papers. To write from memory any specified lines of the following passages from Shakspeare, and explain the meaning of the same : — "The Tempest:" Act 111, Scene 2—from '' Be not afeard, the Isle is full of noises," to " I cried to dream again." ActV., Scene I—from " Hast thou, which art but air," to "I'll drown my book." " Much Ado About Nothing:" Act IV., Scene 2—the passage beginning "Dost thou not suspect my place." " Love's Labour Lost: Act V., Scene 1— from the beginning, to " Peace, the peal begins." "Midsummer Night's Dream :" Act 11., Scene 1 —from " How now, spirit*,'1 to "hide them there." Act 111., Scene 2— from "Lo, she is one of this confederacy to " but one heart." Act IV., Scene I—from "Go, one of you," " what nymphs are those?" Act V., Scene I—from " I never may believe these antique fables " " to a local habitation and a name." "As You Like It:" Act 11., Scene I—from " O yes, into a thousand similes," to "their" (end of 13th line). " Cyinbeline :" Act IV., Scene 2—from "With fairest flowers," to "corse." Same Act and Scene—from " Fear no more the heat of the sun," to "grave." " Macbeth :" Act 1., Scene G—from "This castle hath a pleasant seat," to "the air is delicate." Act 111., Scene I—from "To be thus is nothing," to "utterance." Arithmetic.—Simple and Compound Rules, Practice, Fractions*—Vulgar and Decimal— Proportion, Interest, Making out of Invoices. Geography.'—Political and Physical; with special reference to the Geography of Australasia, and of the South Sea Islands (including their products and trade). History.-England from 1688 to 1820. Rome to the end of First Period (Collier's History of Rome). Writing to be judged from the papers. Reading.—Competitors will be expected to read in a natural manner, and so as to be understood by tho examiner, without the latter having before him the passage -which is being read, also to explain the meaning of the words they have read. Competitors for the open scholarship will be examined in the following subjects in addition to those above specified : — Latin, Virgil, iEneid, book 1. ; with questions on Grammar, Classical History, Geography, Mythology arising from the text. Translations of easy English into Latin. French.—Charles XII., books 1, 2, 3; grammar. Translation of English into French. Euclid.—Books I. to IV. (inclusive). Algebra.—Simple Rules, Simple Equations of one or two unknown quantities, Quadratics, Indices, and Surds. History of Rome.—Second and Third Periods (Collier's History of Rome).
