Batter had a number o_ friends at the start, but Calumny started the favourite, with betting three to two against her. The horses at the start were very restive, Phantom being particularly bo. When the starter's flag dropped Phantoms rider could not get him away, and the. otter two had gone some distance before he eofl" sented to move. CalumnyMt once assume* the lead, with Batter infuse »*to™ evidently forcing the running. At the turn for home Phantom, who was going weu, began to close on his horses, but the m start was too much for him, and all he comu do was to slightly decrease the gap between them. Down the straight Calumny came away, and from this to the winning km the race was hers, winning easily JwS second, and Phantom third. There were three lengths between the first and seco| horses.
