The Canterbury Races.

This day. The races yesterday were well attended, and tho weather was beautiful. His Excellency the Governor and suite arrived in time for the first race. The course was crowded and the interest very great when the beil rang for the iirst event, the Maiden Plate, of 100 soys., with a sweepstake added of 10 soys. each ; second horse to save bis stake. For all horses which had never won a sweepstake or plate of the value of 25 soys. previous to starting. Weight for ago. Distance, 1-Jj- miles. Mr Nosworthy's b c Defamer, 3 yrs., 7st. 71bs 1 Mr W. C. Webb's eh c, by Malton, out of Ada, 7st. 71bs 2 Mr tledwoods's br. f. Batter, ;;! yrs., 7st. 41bs 3 Six were coloured on the card for this event, but Marl of Tynne, Malton, Revoke colt, and Traitor were scratched, leaving three to go for it. The Ada colt made tho running at the start, Defamer second, and Batter third. After a few hundred yards had been run Defamer resumed the lead, with Ada colt second, Batter still being in the rear guard. At the quarter of a mile Batter had closed on the Ada colt, and took second place, and at the turn into the straight run the horses were as follows:—Defamer, 1 ; Batter. 2; Ada colt, 3. After a few strides of the home stretch had been gone all were finishing, and the Ada colt came away with second place, but was unable to deprive Defamer of the lead, which he held till finishing a good winner, with Ada colt 2 ■ Batter 'A. Time, 2min. 4S)sec. Butting at tho start placed Defamer as the favourite. Fhkk Handicap of 50 soys. added to a sweepstake of 5 soys. each. Distance, one mile. Mr Redwood's br c fvakapo, 3 yrs, (5 st lOlbs 1 Mr Nosworthy's b m Hatred, (i yrs, 0 st -libs 2 Mr P. Gallet'sbk g Brogden, 3 yrs, Gst 0 Tin's race was looked upon as a certainty for llativd, but Kakapo had a number of frieirds. After a false start, in which several of the horses took a good gallop, they were got away to a good start, "Hatred leading, with Kakapo close up, the rest in a ruck. On coining into the straight Kakapo began gradually to creep up, and ultimately headed Hatred, the mare doing all she could to hold tiie lead. Kakapo's jockey was determined to Force the running, and a capital race neck and neck between the colt and Hatred ensued, terminating in Kakapo winning by about a length, tho rest straggling. Time, I mm. 4Usec. GAN'rrciiRUUY Gup, of 250 soys. added to a sweepstake of 15 soys. each. Distance, 2£ miles. Weight for age. Mr Nosworthy'a bk f Lurline, 4 yrs., 8 st 0 lbs ... l Mr Redwood's eh c Papapa, 3 yrs, 7 st 21bs 2 Mr ft, Ray's bg Tarnbourini, 5 yrs., Ost Gibs 3 Mr Dolamain's b c Temploton, . r! yrs, 7 st 2 lbs ... 0 Capt. Hutchison's be Karl of Lyimo, 3 yrs., Tst 21b ... ... ... .. 0 This was the great event of the meeting. In the outset the race was considered a good tiling for Tainbourini. Lurline got ofi' with a capital start, Papapa having the worst of it. Malvina went away second, and held place till well round. Tainbourini made an effort and got second place, but could not stand the pace-., Papapa taking it in the run home. Lurlino had it all her own way. Ultimately they finished as above, Lurline winning by throe lengths, and there were two lengths between Papapa and Tainbourini. The rest had been beaten oil. Time, 4min. Sscc. Lurline was the favourite at starting, though somo fancied Papapa owing to the lightest weight. Betting was even on Lurline; 3to I. against Papapa, and 4to 1 against all the others except Tainbourini. Railway Plate of 50 soys. Entrance, 5 soys. Weight for age. Distance, lh mile Mr Nosworthy's b. m. Hatred, 0 yrs., Ost. 41b 1 Mr Redwood's b. f. Parinza, 3 yrs, 7st., 131bs 2 No Gentleman also ran. Mr Noswoithy was declared to run with Hatred. A very good start was effected, Hatred taking the lead, closely followed by Parinza, No Gentleman coming \ip close. Parinza ran a game horse, and was a good second.
Hack Rack.—The Hack Race was won by the Butt.
