OFFICIAL ENQUIRY AT ONEHUNGA.
Tbe official enquiry into alleged irregularities in the conduct of the pilot service at the Manukau, was brought to a close yest3rday. The enquiry had originatad in charges made by Henry Jeffares, through the columns of this journal, against Captain Wing, the pilot and harbourmaster, and was held in the Courthouse, Onelmnga. It occupied two days ; on the former o'i these it was conducted in the presence of Mr Sheohan, Goldfields Secretary, and Captain Burgess ; and on yesterday by Captain Burgess alone. As we have .not space for the whole of the evidence, we do not feel warranted in publishing a part, but refer our readers to our two morning contemporaries, in which the evidence is published in extenso. There were examined Henry Jeffares, who had brought the case forward through our columns, Francis Conway, who'had joined in the accusations and then sneaked out; Hugh Evans, coxswain on board the Pilot beat; Richard Skinner, a boatman ; Penetana, a Maori; Mr John Lundon, M. P. C.; Martin McMahon, James Mclnlyre, svho had the contract for painting the buoys ; Captain Wing and Charles Norman, formerly in the Pilot Service, We restrain ourselves from comment on the evidence as the case may be regarded as still svhjudice ; the decision being not yet given; bat we would recommend to our readers a perusal of the case as it appears in this morning's Cross and. Serald.
