NEWTON BAND OF HOPER

The fortnightly entertainment of the Newton Band of Hope was held in the commodious school-room, Edinburgh street, last night. The attendance was good. The programme comprised readings and recitations by Messrs Webster, N. Wood, E. Wood, S. Spragg, and Carlaw ; speeches by Messrs Carr and Tremain; recitation by Master 0. Potter; and selections of music on the harmonium. The meeting was capital, with sufficient hearty laughter to dispense with medicine for the summer. These meetings will be held fortnightly henceforth, and no pains will be spared to get up good programmes and render every meeting successful. The meeting was disturbed several times last night by a lot of young fellows outside throwing missiles into the lobby, whistling, &c. This is not done by children, butby those old enough to know better ; and if it occur again, we understand that the committee will consider it a duty they owe to society to bring the offenders before Mr Beckham, or perhaps a whalebone whip smartly applied, with breeches drawn tight, might be as effectual a cure. There tire those in connection with the school quite able to administer the same. A word to the wise is sufficient.
