PRINCE OF WALES THEATRE
The " Merchant of Venice" was performed last evening. To witness a play in which. Mr Tavares assumes the leading character, is to enjoy an intellectual treat of the highest order. No tragedian of anything like equal ability has appeared in this city. The masterpieces of the great dramatist are by him raised to their true grandeur, and the text interpreted with the skill of a well qualified commentator. The gloomy soul of Hamlet, the grim maglignity of Richard, and the wild "justice" of Shylock, are difficult conceptions of the Sliake3perian drama in which his wonderful versatility find 3 ample scope. Mr Tavares was ably supported last evening by Mr Hoskins and the stock company. To-night " The Two Roses," and the " Serious Family" will be produced, and judging from the popularity of the pieces and merits of the artistes, should draw a crowded audience.
