ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. TARANAKI.
By the arrival of the s.s. Taraimki we have later news from the Soutl& Wo take the following from paper\ *o hand :— CKRISTCHUKCH. January 3. The Provincial Council was opened to-day. , , r. The Volunteers have returned from camp. At the Supremo Court to-day, John Muirhead, for forgery, was sentenced to three years' penal servitude _ E. Burke, against whom three convictions for the same offence were obtained, was sentenced to four years' penal servitude ; and John Reid, for obtaining money under false pretences, to nine months' imprisonment. _ " The Opera Company performed La Sonnambula last ni^ht to a house crowded to excess, and were triumphantly successful. January G. The Kaiapoi Eegatta took place today. The weather good and attendance large. The three mile champion fouroar race won by the Mayflower, of 1 Lyttelton; the Kuku, of Kaiapoi, being second. The race was the finest.' one ever witnessed in the province, the first four boats being all in a ruck. In the scullers' race, J. Dawson was first and E. Wright second. The Canterbury Eleven were met, on their return from Dunedin, by a large number of cricketers, and were entertained at luncheon.
