"REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY."
To the Editor of the EvENixa Stab. Sib, —I always thought that in. every Christian country it was usual to close the public offices on holidays, such, for instance, as Christmas Day, &c. Can-you tell me why in Auckland tho office of the Inspector of Police is kept open,—not only on all festive occasions,—but actually on the Sabbath also ? Surely, it must either bo a mistake, or is permitted from mistaken zeal, or what ? Such things ought not to be; as, to say the least, the example is not a good one?. What must the subordinate.-! think of a system that does not allow them the privilege of attending a place of worship; the said office, I am told, being kept open from nine a.m. till five p.m. The head of the department must surely have forgotten that part of his catechism which says " Six days shalt thou labour, &c." Hoping I have not taken up too much of your valuable paper, I remain, Your's &c, A Respecter of the Saejutil"" [While respecting the conscientious feelings of our correspondent, we*fi'o! that in the present wicked state of the world tho police must bo regarded as an exceptional class, and that Mr Inspector Broham and his subordinates must watch whilo others pray.
