NEW YEAR'S SPORTS.

CALEDONIAN GAMES

On Moiday next the Caledonian' G-ames will ommence at the Albert .Barracks, and wll extend over to Tuesday. By the programme and entries made by competitors h the various games, very great sport may be anticipated. The first day the programme will consist of quoiting, bagpip music, flat race, putting the stone, wleelbarrow race, Highland fling, throwiig the hammer, flat race, Cumberland vrestling, running high leap, single stick /ombat, boys' race, reel of Tulloch, putting the light stone, tossing the caber, sword dance, flat race, tilting, and last but not least a donkey race, the last donkey to bo the winner. The prizes range from £7 to ss. The splendid band of the Auckland Volunteer Artillery will be in attendance both days. The charge for admission is, Is ; entrance to Grand Stand, Is 6d and 2s Gd. Eefreshment booths aro erected on the ground. At the entrance gate Messrs Campion and Hale's booth will strike the eye of every incomer. Their name is a sufficient guarantee that the public will be well provided for if they trust themselves in their hands. Mr Page, of tho Cnfcpvinn. will have h.ie refreshment bar beneath the Grand Stand. The arrangements for the games are being made in a style not before attempted in this city for any amusements of a similar I character. A grand stand with awning has been erected, and will accommodate about 1,000 people -comfortably; and, instead of the elastic ropes which on every previous occasion fenced in the Olympic ground, a strong two-railed fence has been erected. Other good arrangements have also been made, and Monday next ought to give^the Society a great triumph. NORTH SHORE ATHLETIC SPORTS. On Monday at the grounds attached to Holmes' Hotel there will bo some lively sport. The following races are intended to come oil 1: —Hurdle race, maiden race, sack race, wheelbarrow race, boy's race, old men's race, walking the greasy boom, barrel race, and quoit race..

CItEMOKNE CLUtDENS

These gardens will be open to the public on Monday and Tuosday next; tnoy are in beautiful condition and everything that man can require for his enjoyment are to be procured there. It i.s in fact the place to spend a happy day, and the attractions to be met with are well worth the journey. Dancing in the monster pavillion will take place to tho music provided by an efficient band. Various games will also be held for the enjoyment of all.

New Year's Day will be kept at the Strawberry Gardens, llosebank Nursery, North Shore, in grand style. The Band of the .Rifle Brigade will in attendance, and will discourse various selections during tho day. Dancing intheEotunda for young men, maidens, and whoever else that like to join. Various games and amusements will take place in the adjoining paddock. Strawberries and oreani, ad libitum, will be supplied to the visitors >'n the garden, arbors, and on the grounds. VAUXIIALL GAEDENS

Those who enjoyed themselves so much at these gardens last Tuesday will probably pay them another visit on New Year's Da}\ All manner of amusements will be provided for the young people, in which generally old ones join. Refreshments will also be procurable.

SKATING ItIXK.

The vast area of the Drill Shed will be open as an American Skating Rink on Monday next. This will afford immense amusement to all lovers of skating, as they will find sufficient space to enjoy the manly exercise.
