CRICKET.
The return match, Country v United Cricket Club will bo played at Pigeon Mountain, Howick, on New Year's Day (Monday next). The following are the United team :—Messrs Mumford, Clifton, Millar, F A Whitaker, W Carter, Ollivier, Moss, Davis, Geo Carter, E Whitaker, and Brown.
A game was to have been played to-day between an eleven of the World and another from Surrey and Gloucester. The committee of the Caledonian Society, however, had first pick of the ground, and in consequence the substantial two-railed ring fence erected by them has utterly prevented the play for the present, for it embraces far too narrow a'space of ground for the cricketers to manoeuvre in. The game will however come off some day in the ensuing week. G-reat disappointment was felt, not only by the cricketers themselves but by many enthusiastic visitors who will now have to await the conclusion of the Caledonian games before their old English propensities can be gratified.
We understand that the cricketers of Auckland have it in contemplation to challenge the Sydney men to a game in this city. This shows great pluck and confidence, for the cricketers of New South Wales have long bien famous, and held their own w\th great credit against the professionals who cans from the old country some years ago with the intention ' of carrying, all before thim. We hope the match will be arrangoi for it will give our citizens a better ideaof what cricket ought to be than maiiyni Jffeseot appear io realise. ' ,-«*■--.^>f
