THAMES POLICE COURT.—Wednesday.

[Before W. Frazer, Esq., "R M.J Stealing Q.uartz fhom the Calkdonj4n Golb Miking Company.—Timothy Dmiovan and Robfc. Gowlis were charged with stealing several auriferous stones, value 35., the property of the Caledonian Gold Mining : Company, on Monday, tlio .-Ith inst. — Mr. j Mi'ler appeared for ti.e company, and Mr. Dodd for the defendant?.—Constable Brennan deposed : I saw the prisoners in the police station, Grahamstown, on Monday last, about 11 a.m., when Ihey -were charged by Captain Richards with stealing stone from the Caledonian Gold Mining Company's ground. The stone produced was given me by Captnin Richards. The prisoner Donovan said that lie had picked up the stone to look at, and never intended taking it. The ticket produced was also found upon Donovan', who stated that it was found with a plant of sp cimens, and had about 30 more, which ho had got in a similar way, by springing " plants" in a cntting in the rear of the company's office. —Cross examined i by Mr. Dodd : Can you swear to any of the | stone picked up by Donovan ?—No ; I received them from Richards, in the presence of Rowe, jun.; Sanderson, aud Ibbotson. Donovan told me afterwards that the ticket produced was got with the specimens three months ago. — J.hn O'Meara, chief clerk in the Warden's office, produced the certificate of the Caledonian Gold Mining Company (Registered). A. triplicate of the lease was produced, which was objected to by Mr. Dodd.—After some discussion His Worship decided to remand the prisoners to Tuesday | next, to allow the necessary documents to be i produced. The Bench made some strong remarks on the inconvenience experienced by having documents lelative to a mine at a distance of 50 miles away.
