Sir, —As it is necessiry that some general rule should be laid down in regard 10 class firing for the whole of the Volunteer Force, I have the honor to inform you that, for tho current Volunteer year, the following will be the regulations for the guidance of such corps as are desirous of goinj through the courso : — IX THE TfIIRD CLASS. IN TIIK SECOND CLASS, 400 yards 0 x ofeet \ 600 yards centre 4x4 f kuceling ditto 550 yards bulls) „ 0 ( 000 yards eye f" " J .Minimum points to be obtained to pass into first class *. 30 poinls. IN THE FIRST CLAHS. 050 yards oxß feet "j 700 yards centre ox 4 f (litto 7-jO yards bulls _ „ .. C J 800 yards eye f iX4 I Minimum points to be obtained to win marksman's badge: 22 points. Whore the range available extends only to GOO yards, Volunteers firing in the first class, may —if they wish to obtain tho marksman's badge—fire ten rounds at 550 yards, and ten rounds at 600 yards, at a third class target (viz. : 6 x 4 feet ; centre, 4x2; bull's eye, 2 x.l); any position. The result of last year's District and General prizo firing proved that in those districts where the course was adopted, a very much higher average was obtained. And you will be good enough to point out to tho several corps under your command, the benefits to be gained by a Bteady cour.-c of practice and class tiring, and thus endeavour to increase their general efficiency. Tho advantages to bo derived arc so apparent, that in the event of any prize firing taking place during the ensuing Summer, it is contemplated to offer some special prizes for such district representatives us have completed a course of ciass firing, and have become marksmen. — t have, &c, Philip 11 auington-, Lieut.-Colonel, Inspector of Militia and Volunteers.
