THIS LATE BISHOP PATTESON.
PUBLIC MEETING,
Last night there was a very large and most interesting public meeting held at the Choral Hull in connection with the proposed Bishop Patteson Memorial Fund. Bishop Cowic presided, and there were not only clergymen and members of the Church of England, but of all denominations, present, and taking part in the proceeding*. -Tho following resolutions were carried unanimously : — "That this meeting desires to bear its testi mony to tho feelings with which, the late Bishop Patteson was regarded by all members of the Christian Church of this colony ; and would reeoid their thankfulness to Almighty God for having raised up and sent forth one
so qualified to labour for the spread of the Gospi I umohspt tbe people of Molane.-ia."--'•That this meeting desires to express its feelings of deep sympathy with the surviving members of -, : the Mclanesian Misson tor the loss of two such labourers as Bishop l'atteson and tho Key. Joseph Atkin, and prays CrO'l thai they may be strengthened and
f-nabled to carry out. the good work which has already attained fucli a degree «>f advancement." "That a Bishop Memorial Fund be originated, to which the churches in other provinces of Xew Z'-aland, Lite Australian colonies, India, aid tho United Kingdom, be invited to contribute ; and the fun.is so rai-ed shall be appropriated—first, to the general purposes of to Melanesian Misson; and, second, tbe building of a vessel lobe c died the Bishop Patteson." ■'That thi* meeting is impressed with the conviction that the death of Bishop Patteson and the i.cv. J. At.in is at tribujable to the so-called labour trade carried on by British subjects and others in the 1.-lauds of the South I.i-nic, and respectfully firges the Imperial Government to take measures in concert: with the Australian and New Zealand Governments to place thai trade untie* effective control. That a memorial embodying this res lutiou be signed by the right reverend the ~],„; ~, on 'uHiidf of this meeting, and forwarded to the ecivtary of State for the Colonies." —A committee was selected to carry out the objects of the meeting.—After a vote of thanks, and the benediction, the meeting dispersed.
