We hold over until to-morrow, remarks on untruthful letters that have been inserted in certain of our contemporaries. We shiill, to morrow, clear up generally arrears of busi nesss. We are obliged, at the last moment, to hold over till to-morrow our remarks, already in type, respecting the " Explanation" inserted in yesterday's issue, and the further "Exphination," published in another column. Hiey both come to us authoritatively, and we accept arid publish them in good faith. In our issue of to-morrow we shall do ample justice to any whose share in the transaction we may have overstated or misstated in the hurry of publication.
We have received an unusually large amount of correspondence respecting the Yale fracas and the stand which we havo taken for the impartial administration of the law. We sincerely thank our correspondents, as well as the whole body of citizens, for their warm anri generous sympathy. But we Ho not desire to insert the letters, or otherwise treat of the pending oases. Never since the Star was firstpublished have we sren so much interest shown in our paper, not even nher. the most exciting war news had arrived and was being published by Extra. Shortly nfter the paper came out yesterday, the ofliee waa jummed full, and a largo crowd extending over the footpaths and almost half way across the street, strove eagerly for pavers. In the oliice, on several occasions, ihe papers Trero torn in pieces by tile struggling customers, and altogether the scene was
the most singular we liuve witnessed for some time.

The dock iv the Police Office was completely unlenauted this morning, not even a single drunkard having graced the place with his presence.
The high reputation Olson's tomato sauce has obtained as a household condiment, has brought many inferior articles into the market The public are therefore warned not to be imposed upon with rubbish, but ask for Olson's genuine ttmmtfo sauce, and see that hi i name is on the bottle.—[Advt.]
The Resident Magistrate finds much difficulty in dealing with cases in which young c:riininal3 are. brought before him for infringements of the law. The thing is, that the lending of half-fledged malefactors to the Stockade at Mount Eden is likely to do them much more harm than goo I, and the sojourn jf a few, weeks iv that rural retreat, where r,ho condemned party has the benefit of full rations, easy work, and the society of those who have taken a high degree in crime, is likely to find them turned out fully fledged, and an fuit in the ways of accomplish'd malefactors. For these reasons the .Resident Magistrate has even gone the length of discharging juvenile rogues aud vagabonds, on hearing that there was some prabability of a consequent reformation ; and on more than one occasion, thinking that the peual discipline at Mount Eden was too lax, has had them locked up iv the central office, ia solitary confinement, with the view of giving them a taste of what they ought to expect. But, it is to be feared, this mild kind of discipline will have no effect, and that a few flays' abstinence will only add fuel to the flame, and the prurient proclivities of the condemned parties only prove more rampant after a short suspension. There is scarcely a day when Captain Beckham presides at the Police Court, when he is not compelled-to make some very severe remarks on the utter inefficiency of the present hard labor system as carried put at the Mount Eden retreat, ".vhich seems really to invite lazy, lounging scoundrels to commit petty depredations for the express purpose of enjoying themselves at the " hermitage" on the good feed and accommodation to be met with there. Legislation seems to be imperatively demanded in the matter ; and something like a reformatory school is required,—or else there must be inaugurated some better system of managing the hard labor prisoners iv gaol, and compelling them actually to do the work to which they have been, sentenced. Present arrangeu.onts appear to be "Utterly faulty, either from want of room or something else ; and measures ought to be adopted which may make the gaol a terror to evil doers, instead of a refuge for the destitute. It is to be hoped that some of our legislators and other public men will take the matter in hand.
