Detjnkenness.—Two persons wero punished in the usuul manner for a first offence; and one for a third, was sent to gaol for seven days.
Breach oe Vagbant Act.—Maggie Carroll was uhitrgod with having no visible lawful means of support. She pleaded not guilty; uu; li:o police having proved that she obtained li t livelihood by prostitution, she was sentenced io one month's imprisonment with hard labor. — Bridget Hawkey, an old offender, for using obscene language in a public place, was ordered. %a pay a fine of £10 and costs, or be imprisoned for three months with hard labor.
Lahceny.—Mary Harris, alias Horton, was charged by Alexander Byers with stealing a quantity of wearing apparel, valued at £4. She pleaded guilty of having stolen portion of the missing articles while in difficulties, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor.
Breach of Shatohthe House Act. Richard Sondall was charged with permitting three sheep to be slaughtered on his premises in "Wakefiuld-street, being within the limits of the city of Auckland.—Mr. Joy, LL.B., appeared for defendant.—Constable.Donovan deposed that on the 7th instant, he found the blood, offal, and warm skins of sheep hanging up in an out-house of defendant^ premises.—William Davis, a lad recently in the employ of defendant, deposed that ho heid tho sheep down while another boy killed them. In cross-examination witness said the sheep were killed in tho upper shop, over the door of which tho name of George, and not Saudall, appeared.—Sergeant Pardy deposed that defendant resided and carriod ou business in the premises where the sheep were slaughtered.—For the defence, T. H. Smith was culled to prove that Mr. George was the party who rented the premises : but the Bench held that, as Sandall resided them, lie was the responsible party, and fined him live pounds and costs for every sheep slaughtered. An application for time was refused on account of the magnitude of the offence.
