President Grant, several Cabinet officers, and members of Congress will visit California and Oregon in August and September, and will probably extend the trip to Honolulu. Union of British Columbia and Vancouver's, Island, with dominion, to Canada, will date from 6th July. Opposition to treaty of Washington withdrawn in the English Parliament. The 4reaty will be signed by the Queen., The U. S. Senate ratified treaty, there being only twelve dissenting votes. ' The opposition to treaty in Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, continues very bitter. Surveys on projected trans-continental lines are being pushed vigorously. It is now certain that within four or "five years there will be at least four lines from -the Atlantic, and six from the Pacific, via. : Northern Pacific, Californiun Pacific (commenced), Central Pacific (completed), and Texas Pacific (extreme southward) will be completed.
