FOXTON,
June 4. —Mi-. Halcorabe left PalmerstOn for Foxton yesterday in Jonson's boat, with six men, to look at navigation of the river;; About a mile above Ngawkakarau, the safety of the boat was imperilled by a sunken snog. The boat settled down five feet under water. As five of the party were unable to swim, a heavy fresh running and night approaching, the only hope of escape lay in one of the party swimming ashore and' sending h<Slp 'from Ngawhakarau.—A nian named Lawrence;\vas the first to make the attempt, but was drowned. Mr. Halcombe being less encumbered, after a long struggle, succeeded-in,.landing; He immediately sent a canoe, and the other five men, after two hours immersion, were rescued. —Poor Lawrence leave's a w.ife and six young children destitute. * ; i ;; : ,• . ~vr
