THE ARTISTS' EXHIBITION.

The exhibition of paintings and works of arc, iastiLuted under the auspices of the Auckland Society of Artists, pud to which we have al. been looking forward with many anticipations of ])lcasure, will probably open ou Wednesday next, the Ist March. We looked iito the Cuy Hal! yesterday and found the hanging committee busHy engaged on the--" arduous task of receiving, placing, and cataloguing the vaxious contributions. Drawings and paintings were to be seen in all directions in " orderly confusion," but enough were already hung upon the walls to afford an idea of what kind of an exhibition we are likely to have. We were agreeably surprised to see so many re^ly good pictures, not only from the hands of local artists, but as contributions from- the Southern Provinces. Amongst the most interesting of the !pictures sent in, are paintings by English artists of celebrity, as Herring and Turner. Steel engravings are not unrepresented, and several c' things of merit will not be overlooked. The sincere thanks of us all will be due to those private individuals who have so largely contributed from their private ecliections to swe 1! the attractions of the exhibition. No less than 303 piclureswi 1! be on view. We have on a previous occasion expressed an opinion which we now reiterate, that the Society of Avtists has every cla^m upon our support. In an educational, md therefore progressive point of view, its efforts are calculated to tend to good results. The society wl 1!, however, need little outside commendation, since it wx'l speak for itself in tins its first appearance before the public. Of course everybody will view the exhibition at the City H? 11, and judge for thomselves. The committee neeci not fear for the result. — Herald.
