We were informed that there were but two tenders received yesterday by the Dedwood Highway Board for earthworke to be done in
Ponsonby Road. The work was of an exceedingly simple and easy c'nrajtcr. requiring no engineering skill, and we are at a loss to account for there being only two tenders for it, unless on the supposition that contractors and labouring men are so fiVly employed that they cannot tmdeifcalie any more work than what they have f "ready in hand. To-day the same Board have advertised that they re-qir-e other work doing, \lz., cutting down the top of College hi'l, forming the continuation of College Si.l Road to Shelley Beach Road, and improving Mount St.Mary's Road. We are a 1 so raCoimed that the Board will in a few days invite tenders for She?.ley Beach Road, Now-stw rood-street, and Aitna P1r.30. As soon a. eaifchworka are done, metr! will be pui -»-roads rsquv.-ing it so far as funds will permit, pid the district VI be great iy improved. A coriiderable number of ratepayers have nlveady paid the rates, and the above-named works will. be pushed on as fast as the ratepayers ; ~i and near the st-eets to be improved provide the means by paying theiv rates. Those who pay first will, we suppose, have the streets ; ti their neighbourhood improved fi-st, on the old plan ol £?.'sfc come first served.
