WRECK OF THE S.S. AIREDALE.

PASSENGEES, MATL a, AND CBEW

SAVED.

Wfl are sincerely sorry to have to record the wreck of the favorite steamer Airedale off" the coast of Taranaki, intelligence regarding which has arrived this morning in Auckland. From the general feeling expressed throughout the city, there is a warm sympathy for the enterprising proprietors, Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane, and sincere hopes that the disaster may not be so great as appears at first sight, although from the exposed nature of the Taranaki coast, the danger to the vessel must be very imminent. The Airedale left the Manukau on Manukau on Monday last, followed by the Phoebe, both vessels bound for Taranaki and the South. At four o'clock on Tuesday morning the Airedale was some distance in advance of the Phoebe, and during a dense fog, suddenly struck upon some rock, at Omaruia, a place about two miles north of Waitara. Fortunately the Phoebe was close at hand, and immediately ran alongside to render what assistance she could. The whole of the passengers and mails were transhipped, and the Phcebe proceeded to Nelson, where she would arrive early this morning. The s.s. St. Itilda then proceeded to the wreck with a surf boat in tow, and when she left Captain Kennedy and his crew were busy saving as much of the cargo as possible. When Captain Flowerday left the water was up to the Jdeck, and the chances of getting her afloat again were small. The Airedale was insured iv the Southern Insurance Company for £6000; we shall probably have more particulars in a few days. The following is a list of the passengers Mr. Palmer, Mr. Thorne, Mr. Marltß, Mrs. Williams and infant, Mr3. Yobrah, Mr. and Miss Gledheir, Mossis. llama, Watson, Bailey, and O'Sulliran.
