POLICE COURT.—Friday.
[Before J. Baber and H. D. Morpeth, Esqs., Justices.] Drunkenness. — Three persons were punished in the usual way for drunkenness. Stealing- froh a Dwelling.—John Colnne was charged by John Chase "with having stolen from his tent at Woikomiti, en or about the 16th inst., various articles, valued,. ■t'l 15s 7d.—John Chase deposed that on the day in question he left hi 3 tent closed and /on entering in the evening found (lie dooivtfpen and the boy standing outside. Missed various articles enumerated. Nextday wentto Thomas's store and received the bag which was stolen from him. The land on which he was digging was in his charge.—Jane Thomas, wife of John Thomas, deposed: I remember the prosecutor coming to our store, inquiring if a boy had sold gum. Told him that two boys had been there that morning, and sold about 20 lbs. I had paid them for it. Gave a bag like that produced. I had got it from the boys that morning. I said to Chase that ene of the boys was like the lad mentioned by him. Dc not know the prisoner. Said to Detective Ternahan that if I did not know the boy I woiild not identify him. I also told him I would not attend the Court. Ido not know that 1 ever s*w the prisoner before. This deponent was evidently a very reluctant witness.—Prosecutor re-called, related again the interview between him and last witness. —The case was dismissed.
