CITY BOARD.

SPECIAL MEETING.—THIS DAY. The Chairman stated the meeting had been called for the purpose of considering the advisability of offering a reward lor the discovery of the origin of the fire at the kerosene store in Mechanics' Bay, and whether it would be desirable to join, with the Insurance Companies in offering a reward.—lt was stated that, probably, the Insurance Companies would offer a reward, and the City Board were competent to do the same. — Mr. Staines objected to a reward being offered until an inquest had been held.— Mr. Atkins remarked that (his case was very different from the fact that neither the store or its contents were insured.— Mr. George was of opinion, that the Board had not met too soon in the matter, and recommended that the reward be taken from the money received feoni the Dangerous Goods Act.—A motion was passed to co-operate with the isnurance companies. It was considered desirable by the members of the Board to bring under the notice of Mis Honor the Superintendent the small police force on duty at night. Messrs. Staines and Atkins spoke in favour of having a special constabulary force established. It was finally agreed that a deputation, consisting of the Chairman, Messrs. Smart, Atkins, and George, wait on His Honor in reference to this and other matters.
