Mrs. Bell, wife of William Bell of the firm of Williims and Co., Queen-street, who had been staying at the Waikato, having just been confined of twins, the mother and infants are dead. Those of are readers who take an interest in the prosecution for libel brought by the Government down South, may remember the object of it in a person of great length with an umbrella, who appeared in Queen-stivet some five months ago. He had come up from the South, to establish a kind of telegraphic! company, and seemed always conscious of his position as Editor of an Otago paper. In walking up and down Queen-street which was his favorite promenade; his umbrella and h-i were always conspicuous objects, boih from their great altitude and his pose being ns if he had swallowed a ramrod, while his air was that of a man who felt that a person from Olago was of some conse jUence in the province of Hauhauisni. That eminent individual was Mr. Barton, who is now being prosecuted criminally for libel.

A child named Hanoran residing off Chancery-street, and about five years old, fell to-day off the wharf into the water and was very nearly drowned. He was rescued by a bystander,"and with great difficulty revived. Under the care of Dr. Tas3ell who waa Tory speedly in attendance the child was removed home, and though in a very feeble state; it is anticipated that nothing sei'ious will result.
