CHRISTCHURCH.
November 21.-James Alexander, postmaster at Kaiapoi, was arrested last evening on a charge of embezzling Government monies, His defalcations amount to over £100. He was remanded this morning to Kaiapoi.—The ballot was brought into operation for the first time in this Province on S.aturday last, at Oxford. Higgins has been returned to the Provincial. Council for that district, beating B. Harfc by four.—Mr. Christopher Balwood's stables we.re burnt down.last night; the building was uninsured. This is the second fire in tLe same locality in less than three weeks. —The Lyttelton Fire Selief Committee are now sitting. Claims have been sent in amounting to £10,000. —The, Superintendent caved in to the Executive ; nevertheless, the Council last evening passed, without , a dissentient voice, Mr. Williams' motion, which virtually condemns, the Superintendent's previous action. The Conncil immediately adjourned till Tuesday. —Judge Gresson made an order to-day for the winding up of the Great Eoss Mining Extended Company forthwith. Many Christchurch people are heavy losers.
