EMBEZZLEMENT AT CHRISTCHURCH.
The s.s. Lord Ashley arrived in harbour early this morning. By her we have received late Southern papers, from which we take the following:—
WELLINGTON
November 18. —Notice is given in the Gazette that Otago's share of the £50,000 under the Payment of Provinces Act for the present year is £14.000. Tt is to be divided amongst the Eoad Boards in the same proportion as any sum appropriated by the Provincial Council for the sanie purpose.—Mr. John Blackett is gazetted Engineer under the Immigration and Public Works Act, and Mr. J. T. Stewart, District Engineer. November 21.—The G-eneral G-ovcrnment have arranged to pay all. provincial arrears and liabilities for the maintenance of the necessary departments, until the end of the financial year. The Provincial Government, after much hesitation, accepted this.
