SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT THE CITY OF DUNEDIN CLAIM.

A very shocking affair took place this morning in the shaft of this mine, whereby one. of the miners named David Mitzer has not only lost his leg, bnt his life is at this moment in great danger from the injuries received. It appears that a small shoot was required for the stopes, and this had been prepared on the surface when Mitzer hooked it on to the windlass, which was lowered with himself standing upon the timber. It had not descended more than 35 feet, when, by some means or other, it caught the lining of the shaft, the rope immediately slacked and unhitched the hook, precipitating the poor fellow to. the bottom, a distance of 75 feet. An alarm was at once raised. He was brought up gently to the surface, when it was found that his injuries were of such a serious nature that it would be most judicious to take him to the hospital, which' was accordingly done by his mates. He was here attended to by the Resident Surgeon (Dr. Lethbridge), and Drs. Kilgour and Trosseau, who, after consultation', decided to amputate the leg, which has been done. —[Thames Correspondent.] •
