THE PERMISSIVE BILL.
The annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the Drury Alliance League was held in the room of the Young Men's Christian Association last evening. There was a very good attendance. It was resolved that the title should be changed to that of the Auckland Association for the Suppression of the Liquor Traffic. A good deal of conversation took place on the subject of intemperance; and a committee was appointed to test the feeling of the inhabitants of the City West on the subject of the Permissive Bill. The following articles of the new Association were drawn up, with list of office-bearers :—•
" CONSTITUTION OF THE ASSOCIATION, " 1. This Association shall be denominated 'The Auckland Political Association, for the Suppression of the Liquor Traffic' "2. The objects of the Association shall be to cail forth and direct an enlightened public opinion, in order to procurer from the legislature the enactment of a permissive law prohibiting the common sale of intoxicating liqnors^in public houses whenever two-thirds of the male adult inhabitants of any district may record their votes in favor of its application. " 3. All persons approving of its objects and contributing not less than one shiUing annually to its funds, shall be members of the Association. "The business of the Association sball be managed by a President, Treasurer, Secretary and a Council of twenty-four members, five to form a quorum, to be elected at the annual meeting in the month m each year, and no funds of the Association shall be disbursed, nor any liabilities incurred, except under a minute of the Council. Such Council shali have power to fill any vacancies occurring during the y*ar. "5. The Council shall be empowered to elect gentlemen from time to time to be VicePresidents of this Association. " 6. The Association, basing its principles on broad and catholic grounds, recognises its ultimate dependence for success on the blessings of Almighty God." " Office-Bearers and Council.-—Trea-surer, W. The meeting adjourned shortly before ten o'clock.
