THE EARTHQUAKE AT SUNDAY ISLAND.
In our report of the Southern Cross's cruise the other day, we mentioned the fact of the devastation consequent upon the outbreak of a volcano on Sunday Island. Our correspondent at the Bay of Islands writes us : — " The American whale ship Milton, Captain Wilson, called here for letters, &c, yesterday. Captain Wilson reports that Sunday Island (where he called for recruits) is on fire in all directions, and had (on his arrival) been in that state for nearly forty days. During the heavy shocks of earthquakes, preceding and after the eruptions, two islands were tin-own up in the harbour, one of them being, as near as he could judo;e, about 300 feet high. Two families were living on the island, and, on the arrival of Captain Wilson, begged to be taken away, as the heat was so intense, and the sulphureous smell so strong, that all animals near about them were d< stroyed, and it would have been their fate if left much longer there. He at once offered them a passage to Norfolk Island, where he landed them safely. Capt. Wilson deserves great credit for his humane conduct, as, to call at Norfolk Islaad, he had, of course, to deviate very much from the usual track of his cruising ground."
