October 4.—The Timaru Herald strongly ••oraplaius of the Government delaying the press messages, a:id suggests a meeting of a 1 interested, ai. some central place, to take such steps as will effectually.protect tlieimeresis^f the press against conduct inimical to its freedom.—The action of the Government m tne matter of the late English mail telegrams it declares to be d.ingerous, despotic, and dishonest.—The Herald complains, that lasj; mont , it did not receive either Suez or San Francisco summaries until a day alter they had been *cut to other papers. it also urges the necessity of some united action to reduce the cost of messages where a number of journals receive the same, as is the practice in England and America.
