This case was called, and the names of the special jury panel called over. The case will probably be taken tomorrow.

Tht-re are three indictments against the defendant-, each of which will be tried by a separate jury. The first indictment is for the embezzlement of £1000 belonging to Her Majesty, ; the second, for embezzling £1100 as an officer belonging to the public service ; and the third, for embezzli. g £500 iv the capacity of cerk in the Commissariat Department.

Air. Wynn holds a retainer for the defence.

QUARTZ SPECIMEN STEALING,

William Brown, otherwise Jones, was arraigned upon an indictment charging him with having, on the 23rd of June last, stolen twenty pounds of gold ore, the property of the Long Drive Company.

Mr Brookfield prosecuted on behalf of the Crown.

Mr. Weston appeared for the Company, Mr. Rees defended the prisoner.

There were five counts in tho indictment charging the offence in five different forms, the principal of which was that of felony (stealing from a mine created by the statuto). The facts of the case were very few. It appeared that on the 23rd of June last the prisoner was seen in possession of a consider able quantity of auriferous quartz. This he took to a chemist in Willoughby-street, Shortland, where a privat-j berdan is kept for the purpose of crushing and testing auriferous stone. The quartz possessed by the prisoner proved to be extremely rich, so much so that the chemist offer* d £47 for it. The stone, it appeared, was taken from that part of the Long Drive known as the " upper level."
